"For the advocate is judged by the response of those whose minds he seeks to change, and nothing is more likely to spoil his persuasive effect than to be caught out in a factual mistake, especially if the fact relates to a precedent of which the hearer has independent knowledge. 'It wasn't that way' easily transforms itself into 'The whole case must be wrong.'" - Neustadt and May in Thinking in Time (Free Press 1986)

Small Business Hiring Practices for Christians

CALVIN AND HOPS
DATE TBD
TIME: 8-9:30 p.m.

Small Business Ethics for Sinners who hire Sinners
  1. As a small business owner, what hiring policies should one have where "publicly acceptable" sin is concerned?
  2. Should Christians knowingly employ activist-minded sinners (e.g. promoters of sodomite marriage, seeking to remove "in God we trust" from everything, etc) in service industries?
  3. How should a Christian business owner deal with employee theft? How about employee substance abuse?  How about suspicion of abusing sick days?
  4. Do Christian business owners have a greater responsibility to customers or employees when seeking to redeem the culture?
  5. Is it better to welcome the lost onto your staff in hopes of winning them to Christ - or - keep the staff "untainted" in hopes of transforming culture through your business?
  6. Should hiring policies differ depending on the business? For example, Is employing a homosexual waiter different from employing a homosexual teacher, or physician?
  7. Should Christians in service industries refuse service to those with practices obviously and openly contrary to God's Word?  (e.g. If I run a banquet hall, should I refuse to serve a party for an unmarried couple celebrating the birth of their child?)
