"For the advocate is judged by the response of those whose minds he seeks to change, and nothing is more likely to spoil his persuasive effect than to be caught out in a factual mistake, especially if the fact relates to a precedent of which the hearer has independent knowledge. 'It wasn't that way' easily transforms itself into 'The whole case must be wrong.'" - Neustadt and May in Thinking in Time (Free Press 1986)

TOPIC: The Benefits of HALO, Call of Duty, and other First Person Shooter (FPS) games in Training our Young Men for Battle

Some questions to ponder in preparation:

  1. In what context(s) do we want our young men to think about fighting…killing?
  2. What, if anything, is redeeming in FPS gaming?
  3. What, if anything, is deplorable in FPS gaming?
  4. Where is the line between redeeming and squandering time where “entertainment” is concerned?
  5. In the context of spiritual warfare (not physical fitness), how is a good game or racquetball/tennis or a long run a better investment than an intense hour of online Call of Duty or Halo?
  6. What signs of maturity would cause you to “trust” your boy to play ultra-violent FPS games?
  7. What elements in gaming are absolute show-stoppers? “Don’t even bring that in the house!”
  8. What are the benefits of being conversant in the latest FPS game in gaining a handle from which to proclaim the gospel?
